Moth Night at the Portal Ridge Wildlife Preserve

Moth Night — A Night of Nature and Learning

On Saturday, July 19, 2025, we hosted our first-ever Moth Night in partnership with the San Gabriel Mountains CNPS chapter. From 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM, attendees enjoyed an evening immersed in nature, discovering the fascinating world of nocturnal insects.

Setting Up for Nighttime Nature

The evening began with setting up a bright light directed at a white cotton sheet—a method called “lightsheeting.” As darkness fell, the sheet became alive with moths and insects drawn to the glow, creating a lively display.

Capturing the Moment

Guests of all ages photographed and sketched the diverse moths that landed on the sheet. Experts from the Lorquin Entomological Society and Pasadena City College shared identification tips, helping everyone learn about these fascinating creatures.

Learning from the Experts

Our specialists explained the vital role moths play in pollination and the food chain. Their stories brought the insects’ importance to life, making the night both fun and educational.

A Night Connecting with Nature

This event was about more than just spotting moths—it was about appreciating the unseen contributors to healthy ecosystems. The photos and sketches from the night now serve as a fun way for everyone to recognize and learn about local moth species.
