His book A Salad Only the Devil Would Eat: the Joy of Ugly Nature has won multiple awards, and his book Wild Sonoma has a foreword by Jane Goodall. New books include Nocturnalia: Nature in the Western Night and a book about the best hikes in California. Charles has seen over 1,000 species of mammals in the wild.

José Gabriel Martínez-Fonseca divides his time between Nicaragua and Arizona, where he recently completed a Ph.D. in bat ecology.
