Portal Ridge Wildlife Preserve Land Cleanup Day

  • Portal Ridge Wildlife Preserve (map)

Join us for a day outdoors at the Portal Ridge Wildlife Preserve! Get your hands dirty and help us clean up the beautiful land that is home to a diverse range of wildlife. This in-person event is the perfect opportunity to make a positive impact on the environment while enjoying the great outdoors. We will be removing barbed wire from properties that were historically used for ranching and farming before they were acquired by Transition Habitat Conservancy. This will make the area safer for wildlife!

After the cleanup, we are having a public event here at the Trailhead. Expert wildlife photographers will be discussing how they capture images of the wildlife around Portal Ridge. You are invited and welcome to join! Please check that out here... https://TheWildlifeofPortalRidge.eventbrite.com

A little about us...

In 2005, three women living in Pinon Hills, California were discussing their community's wonderful natural area where they enjoyed riding and hiking. They became concerned that ongoing development would soon destroy this jewel and decided to unite and preserve this unique pinyon-juniper and Joshua tree woodland open space. As a result of their dedication and the community's desire to create nature parks and preserve open space, Transition Habitat Conservancy began. Since then, we have established multiple project areas within San Bernardino and Los Angeles Counties, and have worked diligently to protect and improve habitat in the West Mojave Desert.

Portal Ridge Wildlife Preserve is the last piece of the puzzle that will connect the Angeles National Forest, the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, and the Arthur B. Ripley Desert Woodland State Park. The Portal Ridge Wildlife Preserve (PRWP) encompasses a substantial portion of the Portal Ridge-Liebre Mountain Significant Ecological Area. The PRWP and adjacent lands represent a transition zone between three distinct eco-regions: the San Gabriel Mountains, the Tehachapi Foothills and the westernmost portion of the Mojave Desert. A total of thirteen plant communities have been recorded and 110+ wildlife species have been observed. The Preserve contains previously unprotected transitional plant communities and significant wildlife habitat occurring between the Antelope Valley in the western Mojave Desert and Portal Ridge in Los Angeles County, California. These lands contain habitat for the state-listed threatened Swainson’s hawk, large swaths of Joshua Tree woodland, and pristine desert washes. There are 37 documented special status species, rare plant communities, and rare plants.
